Pity as as you said it is a beautiful country steeped in history due to location & world wars.
Such a pity you have no one to practice German with, sadly i shan't be offering my services as I have tried & failed to learn German 3 times now and have no desire to attempt it again. There are Paddy's day parades with floats & bands etc but I think they were inspired by NYC. Although to be honest I can't really comment as I grew up outside of Ireland as an expat & St Patricks has always been a big deal to us and is almost a two week celebration as everyone has parties on diff nights to extend the party and see as many friends as possible.
For example, my irish colleagues and I hosted a Paddy's party last night for our non-irish colleagues. Today we went to a shopping center which has a load of irish stock in and had trad dancers & music in to entertain the masses. Tomorrow there is a traditional ceili (dance) being histed by trad group where everyone can go along & join in the fun and merriment. Monday the Irish judges have invited the Irish members of staff for a party and Tuesday the Irish embassy is hosting a party to gather many expats. For me paddy's day has always been a chance to share my culture with others (music, dance, food and yes drink) and an occasion to meet up with friends that we might not always cross paths with during the rest of the year.
I hope you've a great night out with your friends. :-DAoifehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06324156483692821044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3568084884850100400.post-78685471442383111352014-03-15T19:42:56.570+01:002014-03-15T19:42:56.570+01:00I always just stumbled through your name... it bas...I always just stumbled through your name... it basically went like "ae-ow-fuh" in my head. What a pretty name when said properly! ;)
A little off-topic, but I have to know as I'm getting ready to go out tonight for St. Patrick's day - do people in Ireland actually celebrate this holiday, or are we just creating a holiday to get drunk on? What a small world, what...No way - that is amazing!
What a small world, what brought you to Luxembourg? A lot of people pass through, hardly anyone stops here and it really is a pity as it is a beautiful country - although I know I am completely biased having been lucky enough to grow up here!

Also really cool your drive to learn old/native languages - I think Rosetta Stone does an online/CD-Book learning of Gaeilge if you wanted to take it back up. I'm hoping to find the time to do it some day, I adored Irish in school and was so sorry to not continue learning it when i went to uni as I was terrified my level of Irish would be too far behind all those who grew up in Ireland :(Aoifehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06324156483692821044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3568084884850100400.post-50899187299575117332014-03-12T14:26:10.484+01:002014-03-12T14:26:10.484+01:00I didn't even have a guess on how to pronounce...I didn't even have a guess on how to pronounce your name! I remember running into language issues at a little shop, and a wonderful older woman took me aside and really helped me out. She and I ended up chatting about ponies, as she had done some show jumping in the past. It was pretty awesome. You are totally right about the wealth aspect, though. I remember seeing a bunch of RIDICULOUSLY expensive cars there!

Also, I actually knew how to pronounce your name. As a kid I was super nerdy when it comes to Irish/Welsh things, to the point of trying to learn Welsh and Celtic on my own. That didn't work out well, but some of the pronunciations stick with me. :) My father's family was of extremely close Irish heritage (Hartnetts, anyone?), and I was enthralled.

Cool stuff!
